U.S. Dept. of Education — Federal Student Aid
Because FQHCs are 501(c)(3) nonprofits, they are PSLF-qualifying employers — so FQHC staff with federal Direct Loans can have the entire remaining balance forgiven, tax-free, after 120 qualifying monthly payments (about 10 years) of full-time work. This is the single most valuable debt benefit of working at a community health center.
Eligibility
Full-time employees (at least 30 hrs/week) of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit — which includes virtually all FQHCs — with federal Direct Loans, repaying on an income-driven plan (or Standard 10-year). All FQHC roles qualify, clinical and non-clinical, regardless of job title. Need 120 qualifying payments; they don't have to be consecutive.
U.S. Dept. of Education — Federal Student Aid
The official studentaid.gov tool that checks whether your FQHC counts as a qualifying employer, generates your PSLF form, and lets your HR 'authorized official' sign it electronically. Submit (and re-certify) once a year to keep an accurate count of your qualifying payments — don't wait until payment 120.
Eligibility
Any federal student loan borrower pursuing PSLF. You'll need your employer's EIN (from a W-2) and the email of an HR 'authorized official' for electronic certification. Recommended at least annually and whenever you change jobs.
U.S. Dept. of Education — Federal Student Aid
IDR plans set your federal loan payment as a share of your income — often making payments affordable on a community-health salary — and each on-time IDR payment can count toward PSLF. Important 2026 update: the SAVE plan was ended by a court order (March 10, 2026), so do NOT rely on SAVE; Income-Based Repayment (IBR) is the durable plan that remains, and a new Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) launched July 1, 2026.
Eligibility
Federal student loan borrowers, based on income and family size. As of 2026: IBR remains open and is the recommended income-driven plan for most people (and counts toward PSLF); SAVE has ended. PSLF forgiveness is separate and unaffected by the IDR litigation. Always confirm current options on studentaid.gov before choosing.
HRSA — Bureau of Health Workforce
A federal program that pays off a large share of a nurse's qualifying education debt in exchange for full-time service at a Critical Shortage Facility — a category many FQHCs fall into. Pays 60% of unpaid nursing-school loans over two years, with an optional third year adding another 25% (up to 85% total).
Eligibility
Licensed RNs, advanced practice nurses (incl. nurse practitioners), or nurse faculty with qualifying nursing-education debt, working full-time at a Critical Shortage Facility in/serving a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). Minimum 2-year commitment; competitive, applications open annually.
U.S. Dept. of Education — Federal Student Aid
The official studentaid.gov calculator that compares your federal loan repayment options side by side — estimated monthly payment, total cost, payoff date — and flags which plans work with PSLF. The fastest way to see what an income-driven plan would actually cost you on an FQHC salary.
Eligibility
Anyone with federal student loans (or planning to borrow). Enter your balances and income to compare up to three plans at once and see PSLF impact. Open to all.
National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC)
The National Foundation for Credit Counseling is the largest nonprofit financial-counseling network in the U.S. Its certified counselors review your full financial picture and walk you through your federal repayment and forgiveness options one-on-one — a trustworthy, no-sales-pitch alternative to for-profit 'debt relief' companies.
Eligibility
Open to anyone with student loan debt — federal or private. Counseling is available by phone or online through member agencies in all 50 states; no income or eligibility requirement.
