CMS stops Basic Health Program funding for many lawfully present immigrants
Issue
On September 25, 2026, CMS said Basic Health Program payments will stop counting many lawfully present immigrants starting January 1, 2027. Permanent residents, Cuban and Haitian entrants and COFA migrants still count.
CMS will not act against states that stop covering the others from 2027 through 2029.
