Among the world's largest worker cooperatives · 1956–
When labor and management are the same people.
Founded in the Basque region of Spain in 1956, the Mondragón Corporation is one of the world's largest worker-owned cooperatives — tens of thousands of worker-owners across industry, finance, and retail.
Worker ownership
In a cooperative, the workers ARE the owners — one member, one vote. The structural conflict between labor and capital dissolves because there's no separate capital to fight.
Worker ownership aligns the two sides by design — productivity, pay, and the firm's survival become one shared interest rather than a tug-of-war.
The deeper the shared stake in the outcome, the smaller the gap between "us" and "them" — and even short of ownership, shared goals move the needle.
