Co-Founder & Executive Director, Future Communities Institute
Emma Mayerson co-founded Future Communities Institute to bridge the gap between AI technology and safety-net healthcare delivery for vulnerable populations. FCI convened the Bay Area's first AI-powered safety net program — partnering Akido Labs (ScopeAI), Five Keys, and ReImagine Freedom to deliver AI-guided street medicine to unhoused patients, funded entirely by Medi-Cal CalAIM ECM reimbursement. Previously, Mayerson co-founded and served as Executive Director of Alliance for Girls, the nation's largest alliance of girls' organizations. Her background in coalition building, community organizing, and systems change informs FCI's approach to designing healthcare interventions with unhoused and formerly incarcerated populations. FCI also co-developed the $10.7M Haley Housing project in Bakersfield — a subsidized housing development with on-site AI-powered healthcare.
Mayerson is proving that AI-powered healthcare delivery can be funded sustainably through CalAIM — not grants — while serving the most vulnerable populations. Her FCI model of convening technology partners, community organizations, and healthcare providers is a replicable template for FQHCs looking to expand street medicine or ECM programs. The Akido partnership's 40% ED reduction and 70% patient retention metrics are among the strongest outcomes in safety-net AI implementation. Watch her for early signals on how CalAIM reimbursement models will evolve to support technology-enabled community health.
